Geek Sync | A Visual Model of Cloud Computing

Presenter: Henry Nirsberger

Cloud computing is a technology that allows users to access and use computing resources, such as storage, processing power, and applications, over the internet without the need to manage or maintain physical infrastructure. It relies on remote servers hosted by cloud providers to deliver these resources on-demand, enabling users to scale their computing capabilities as needed.

A conceptual data model can help explain cloud computing by representing the principal components and relationships involved in the cloud ecosystem. Here is a simplified conceptual data model for cloud computing:

  • Cloud provider: The entity that owns, manages, and operates the cloud infrastructure, offering computing resources as a service to users.
  • Cloud services: The various services offered by cloud providers, such as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS).
  • Users: The individuals or organizations that consume cloud services, accessing resources over the internet.
  • Resources: The computing resources provided by cloud providers, including storage, processing power, and applications.
  • Billing and payment: The process by which users pay for the resources they consume, based on usage or subscription plans.

The relationships in the conceptual data model are:

  • The cloud provider offers cloud services.
  • The cloud services provide resources.
  • The users consume cloud services.
  • The users pay for the resources they consume through billing and payment.

This conceptual data model highlights the major components and relationships in the cloud computing ecosystem, making it easier to understand the overall structure and functioning of cloud computing.

Whether you’re a veteran IT professional or new to database design, you have heard about “The Cloud” but perhaps have had little or no direct experience with it. Like many IT professionals worldwide, you are currently confronted with the challenge of quickly absorbing cloud computing concepts. Often, the best way to understand a new and complex subject area is to study its conceptual data model (CDM).

Join IDERA and Henry Nirsberger as he provides a rudimentary understanding of the Amazon Cloud using a conceptual model. Henry will include an understanding of basic data modeling concepts and notations. Joining this Geek Sync will help you to cultivate an appreciation that data modeling can be leveraged for much more than just database design.

Speakers: Henry Nirsberger (CDMP, CBIP) is the author of “A Conceptual Data Model for Amazon EC2” and CEO of HMN Consulting LLC, providing IT consulting services specializing in Data Management, Enterprise Architecture, Cloud, Facilitation, and IT Leadership. As a trained facilitator, he has facilitated over 600 IT design and planning sessions for data modeling, process modeling, database design, project planning, process improvement, requirements consensus, strategy planning, issues management, and team building. He continues to be an unremitting student of data modeling, cloud computing, enterprise architecture, and all aspects of data management. His certifications include CDMP (DAMA), CBIP (TDWI), CDP-DM (ICCP), CFPIM (APICS 1984–2003) and TOGAF 9.
